No need to be afraid of NRC

DEC 17 (WTN) - As you are aware that these days the Citizenship Amendment Act and NRC i.e. National Citizenship Register are in discussion in the country. But do you know about NRC, if you do not know then we tell you what the NRC is and what is its history? Actually, the NRC (National Register of Citizens) shows that a person living in India is an Indian citizen and who is not an Indian citizen. A person whose name is not included in the NRC is considered an illegal citizen in India.

For your information, let us know that NRC is actually the process by which an attempt is made to find out about foreigners living illegally in the country. The NRC was introduced in India after independence in Assam in 1951 when the National Register of Citizens was formed for the first time. First, the National Citizenship Register (NRC) has been updated in Assam, in which around 20 lakh people have been demoted from Indian citizenship. After this, the people of Assam, who were made of citizenship of India, have to resort to documents to prove their citizenship.

Actually, the history of NRC is very old. As you know, in the year 1905, the British partitioned Bengal. The British partitioned Bengal and created a new province in the form of East Bengal and Assam. After the partition of Bengal, Assam was annexed to East Bengal. But when the country was divided, it was feared that Assam should not be separated from India by linking it with East Pakistan.
But at the time of Partition, Assam rebellion started under the leadership of Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam leader. Assam remained with India after this campaign, but Sylhet moved to East Pakistan. In the year 1950, when Assam became the state of the country, the citizenship register was prepared after the census of 1951 and included the residents of Assam.

For your information, let us know that during the British rule, people of Bihar and Bengal used to come to Assam to work in tea plantation and cultivate the vacant land. For this reason, the people of Assam used to hate these people by calling them, outsiders. It was only in the 1950s that outsiders came to Assam gradually becoming a political issue, but even after independence, the people of erstwhile East Pakistan and later Bangladesh continued to enter Assam illegally.

The number of Bangladeshis coming to Assam gradually increased, after which the case of the infiltration of Bangladeshis started catching up. Now that the issue of NRC continues in Assam, people living in Assam before 25 March 1971, has been considered as Indian citizens. For your information, let me tell you that when the internal conflict over language the dispute started in East Pakistan i.e. Bangladesh, the situation in East Pakistan became so violent that a large population of Hindu-Muslim living there was started coming to India.

It is said that in 1971 when the Pakistani Army started repressive action in East Pakistan, about one million people crossed the Bangladesh border and took refuge in Assam. However, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had said that the refugees, irrespective of their religion, would have to return.

If the NRC now applies in the entire country and if you do not have your name in the National Citizenship Register or you have not been able to submit the mandatory documents, then the government will give you full opportunity to get citizenship through the process of your claims and objections. The Modi Government has assured the people of the country that the final NRC will be issued only after the settlement of claims and objections. Even after this, every person will get an opportunity to appeal to the foreign tribunal.
