"Oncology ClassRoom”: Story of a doctor with an ‘enlightening’ mission

Saturday - September 12, 2020 10:12 am , Category : WTN SPECIAL

He is a dedicated teacher who holds it his duty to raise general awareness on cancer and spread motivation and positivity by delivering free lectures to everyone

WTN- Meet Dr Dodul Mondal, Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. No, this is not just the only attribute he is known for. What sets him apart from other members of his ilk is his deep concern for students, patients and lay learners who want to know more about oncology and the latest developments in the field.

He is a dedicated teacher who holds it his duty to raise general awareness on cancer and spread motivation and positivity by delivering free lectures to everyone who is willing to take benefit of the same. To make this feasible, he runs an online teaching platform in the name of “Oncology ClassRoom” where eminent teachers and faculties from India and abroad deliver their lectures voluntarily to teach students and others. The motive is to provide a purely egalitarian platform to oncology students, practitioners and people from far and wide, who don’t have access to specialized information or good quality teaching and are thus deprived of the essential knowledge they should have or want to have and to update the knowledge in a rapidly changing world of cancer care. This vital exposure, that too free of cost, is a boon for thousands of medical students, researchers, patients, their kin and others staying anywhere in the world, who can enter the sessions without any riders of qualification or criteria.

Dr Mondal feels that education should be free and made accessible to all, which is why he developed this open source interactive knowledge sharing platform. He says, in foreign universities and colleges, such free interactive platforms are available aplenty but there is dearth of such facility in India, though there is no shortage of world class specialists and experts in India. The idea was to pool such resources for the benefit of the students. He also told that these lecture series are becoming successful only because of the great teachers of the country who finds time from their extremely busy schedule, prepare for the class and teach selflessly.

Dr Mondal’s classes are held in the evenings for the convenience of the visitors, who are free after their day’s work, and there are sometimes up to five classes conducted per week, depending on the requirement of the subject and demand. An ardent lover of music, literature, photography and cooking, Dr Mondal wishes to develop a dedicated pediatric oncology specialty and Proton Beam Therapy facility.  " It is my dream project for children suffering from cancer and given an opportunity I want to extend benefits of treatment to as many patients as possible," says Dr Mondal.

Basking in the glory of a long and illustrious career serving at some of the best cancer facilities of the country like AIIMS Delhi, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and SGPGIMS Lucknow, Dr Dodul Mondal’s noble initiative is a trendsetting example of selfless service which is an inspiration for many because such dedication for a larger social cause without any pecuniary interest is a growing rarity in our times.
