Thanksgiving: History of the Celebration and why does to celebrate with a turkey dinner?

Thursday - November 24, 2016 4:00 am , Category : WTN SPECIAL

Thanksgiving Day  was originally celebrated as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in some part of the world where as , on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States of America. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations though with other Name. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well and now becoming more conman to the other countries too.
Prayers of thanks and special thanksgiving ceremonies are common among almost all religions after harvests and at other times. It also has aspects of a harvest festival, even though the harvest in New England occurs well before the late-November date on which the modern Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated.

Unexpected disasters or threats of judgement from on high called for Days of Fasting. Special blessings, viewed as coming from God, called for Days of Thanksgiving.

In fact, more lot of  people in the USA celebrate Thanksgiving rather than Christmas. Thanksgiving Day is a secular holiday in a country that officially separates church and state so this probably makes sense.

Why Turky is the special meal for The Thanksgiving Day?

Pilgrim Edward Winslow wrote a letter about that now-famous meal in 1621 which mentioned a turkey hunt before the dinner.
Another theory says the choice of turkey was inspired by Queen Elizabeth I who was eating dinner when she heard that Spanish ships had sunk on their way to attack England.Queenie was so thrilled with the news she ordered another goose be served. Some claim early US settlers roasted turkeys as they were inspired by her actions.

Others say that as wild turkeys are native to North America, they were a natural choice for early settlers.

Special Turkey Dish:

Turkey, goose and duck or turduken (a spatchcocked combo of three whole birds!)

Stuffing (also known as dressing): a mix of bread cubes, chopped celery, carrots, onions and sage stuffed inside the turkey for roasting. Chestnuts, chopped bacon or sausage, and raisins or apples are also sometimes included in the stuffing.
