Almost all psephologist have been proved wrong. 70 years old Republican Donald Trump becomes 45th president of United States of America and would begin is presidency on January 20, 2017. US Presidential elections 2016 is a watershed election which will define domestic and international agenda of White House with a new perspective.
The slogan “Make America Great Again” has gone well with White Americans. Trump’s rhetoric on immigration was strongly opposed by immigrant population but it appears that White Americans have taken it positively.
Donald Trump won the key swing state of Florida, dominated by Hispanic population, where Clinton was expected to win . Florida was largely credited for President Obama’s victory in 2012. But the swing for Trump in Florida was big because of white working class voters in Florida who supported him in a big way.
Trump is against “higher taxes on the wealthy” and disagrees on “support and expansion of Free Trade”. This may have fostered huge support from business community in America.
Women issues like Abortion wherein he disagrees on “woman’s unrestricted right to abort” may have got support from traditional Christian community.
It was expected that women will overwhelmingly support Hillary Clinton. Clinton proposed minimum wage at least to $12 an hour, Trump committed to $10 only. Clinton committed 12 weeks of paid leave to care for a new child or seriously ill family member, Trump proposes six weeks of leave for new mothers. It was also expected that women won’t support Donald Trump after allegations of sexual misconduct. The truth is, with substantial women voters, Trump won’t have won without support of women.
