Why woman of India is not safe?

Saturday - October 15, 2016 7:24 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

By Mehvish Kidwai:

“I belong to Delhi and I have been brought up here. Eve-teasing and prank calls were a daily thing for me. When I used to go to a bus stop or take a DTC bus, or go to the market — I used to feel it as a part of my life” said Taapsee Pannu, actor.

Just like Taapsee there are thousands of girls in India facing eve teasing on a daily basis. Irrespective of the dress they wear, or, their ages, their looks, their educational, professional and marital status, never mind the time or place, women in India are being subjected to all kinds of harassment.

For those who are not aware with the term, eve teasing is the male harassment of a woman in public (physically and verbally both). The women are “eves,” the original temptresses leading men to sin, and therefore men “tease” them.

One of the coaching student in Bhopal told, it’s really difficult for me to go to coaching classes which is at Bitthan Market as there is a signal on my way where every day I see some school boys standing and commenting on every girl passing that way. They use very abusive and slang language that sometimes I feel shame on myself that why I am living in such society with no restrictions on boys.”

There is no uniform law in this country to curb eve-teasing effectively in or within the precinct of educational institutions, places of worship, bus stands, metro-stations, railway stations, cinema theatres, parks, beaches, places of festival, public service vehicles or any other similar place.

As per the National Crime Record Bureau statistics the crimes against women have been increased by 7.1 percent nationwide since 2010. There has been a rise in the number of incidents of rape recorded too. In 2011, 24,206 incidents were recorded, a rise of 9 percent from the previous year. More than half of the victims are between 18 and 30 years of age.

“Day by day cases of eve teasing are increasing and in most of the cases it is not reported as girls are little scared to complaint which somehow gives freedom to boys but after the Nirbhaya case the government has made drastic changes and became more alert where they have introduced Nirbhaya patrolling in every district which is run by a women inspector only. The girl can call any time on the number 1090 and they will reach at the spot immediately. With this, we also have emergency numbers Dial 100 especially for women”, said Ms. Aruna Mohan Rao ADGP, M.P women cell, Bhopal. WTN
