On the recommendations of a panel involved in restructuring of The Medical Council of India (MCI), the centre has come up with a strategy that permits doctors and officials a maximum of 10 years of MCI membership. The draft has been sent to the parliamentary standing committee on health with the motive to ensure transparency and smooth functioning of the MCI.
The top brass officials include the president, vice-president, council members and even the executive panel. The MCI is a statutory body and has the onus of maintaining high standards of education and recognition of medical qualifications in the country.
According to the present norms, any MBBS graduate with an experience of five years can become a MCI member for an unlimited period. Sources reveal that there are plans to raise the qualification bar from Undergraduate to Postgraduate or Professor rank doctor for high ranking jobs in MCI.
