Bhopal: For the past two years, 70-year-old Laxman Das had been suffering from acute pain in the legs. He visited the local doctors, but when they failed to provide any relief, his family brought him to Bhopal. The doctors suggested he undergo surgery which would cost him a huge amount. This was when someone recommended him to visit the People’s Medical College at Bhanpur.

Unavoidable surgery
Professor at Orthopaedic department, Dr Atul Varshney, tells us that the Laxman’s condition had detoriated a lot and he was in utter pain when he approached them and surgery was the only resort. He says, “Had he come to us earlier, we could have treated him with mere medicines and injections. Initially he was apprehensive about the surgery, but when we assured him that he would be able to walk within two days, he agreed.” Laxman was required to undergo Flavec tomy surgery.

Unbelievably low-cost surgery
While speaking about the surgery, Laxman says that his heart skipped a beat when he was told that surgery was the only alternative. He says, “I was expecting that the surgery would cost 40,000-50,000, but the doctors at People’s assured me that there was no need to worry. But when I was handed over a bill of just 12k I could not believe my eyes. I have no words to convey my gratitude to the hospital and its doctors.”

Bone preserving Surgery
There were two important factors in this surgery – the first being replacing general anesthesia with spinal and the other was Flavec tomy surgery which is also known as the bone preserving surgery. The credit goes to anesthesia specialists Dr Mahima Batra and Jeetendra Kumar. The patient was conscious and conversing with the doctors during the surgery.
Dr Varshney explains, “We did not cut the bone of the patient which is the usual practice and requires 15-20 days of complete bed-rest. We only worked on the soft tissues which reduced the surgery and patient’s recovery time.”
Quick recovery
According to Dr Varshney, the patient’s recovery within hours is an important factor. Laxman was actually suffering from sciatica and the pain had reached the legs. Had he approached us earlier we could have used the trans furaminal epidural steroid technique (TFES) in which the a shot is administered on the affected nerve. It may be noted that experts at People’s Orthopaedic department attend to similar patients everyTuesday and Friday.
