Though piles are not life-threatening, they bring a lot of discomfort and are perhaps the most common problem across the globe. But we have failed to open and we shy away from seeking advice on it.

Haemorrhoids are basically swollen veins around the smooth anal walls, opening, anus or lower rectum. They can either be internal or external. While the internal ones are painless, occur within the anus, the external haemorrhoids hurt sometimes even making the movement difficult.

Causes

Hemorrhoids become stretched, thin and irritated when there is increased pressure in the tiny vessels. This swells them up. The pressure could be due to

 Aging

 Obesity

 Diarrhea

 Pregnancy

 Hereditary

 Spinal injury

 Colon cancer

 Anal intercourse

 Hard stools (most common)

 Sitting on the toilet seat for long

 Coughing, vomiting or sneezing

• Standing or sitting for long duration

• Holding breath while doing physical labour

In case, persons who are taking blood thinning medicines experience bleeding, they must immediately approach the medical practitioner. The bleeding can also be sign of bowel cancer. If neglected for long it could lead to various complications including weakness and iron deficiency.

Home remedies

• Cold compress

Take a clean cloth and put an ice cube in it. Place it on the haemorrhoids several times a day. Remember to apply a little pressure. This way, the pain, itching and swelling reduces further improving the bowel movements.

• Apple cider vinegar

Soak a cotton ball in vinegar and apply it on painful haemorrhoids. Initially people may experience burning or stinging sensation but this remedy is extremely good in reducing pain and swelling. Also, soaking yourself for 45 minutes in a tub filled with a cup of ACV gives instant relief.

• Witch hazel

Apply daily a little witch hazel to stop itching and bleeding. This eases the inflammation on the affected region.

• Aloe vera

The anti-inflammatory property of aloe vera soothes and hydrates the irritated veins quickly. Remove the thorns and apply the pulp on the affected part. You may also freeze before use for even better results.

• Lemon juice

The antioxidant goodness of lemon reduces haemorrhoid pain. It can be topically applied alone or mixed with honey and ginger. Adding ginger can give a stinging sensation and hence can be skipped.

• Black tea bags

The tannic acid in tea reduces swelling and pain when a warm or frozen or cold tea bag is applied to the haemorrhoid 2-3 times a day.

• Olive, almond, coconut oil

The three oils are excellent in soothing the discomfort. The elasticity of the blood vessels increases and passing the stool becomes easy. Also, cooking meals in olive oil ensures its intake and improves bowel movement.  On the other hand, the almond oil is known for its absorption qualities and is very effective in treating external haemorrhoids if applied directly. Similarly, coconut oil can be directly applied to the inflamed region regularly.

• Black cumin seeds (
saha jeera): Mix equal amount of roasted and unroasted cumin seeds and powder it well. Consume half a teaspoon with a glass of water everyday.

• Radish juice: Drink radish juice regularly as it is one of the best known home remedies. Also, try applying it mixed with honey to ease pain.

• Boost fiber intake: Fiber-rich diet softens the stools and is vital for colon and digestive health. The nutrients sweep clean the gastrointestinal system, prevent constipation and allow the colon to work at greater efficiency level. Fiber sources include vegetables, fruits, psyllium husk, flax seeds, almonds, prunes, pears and beans.  Also, bitter gourd juice and buttermilk with carom seeds is one of the best ways to aid bowel movement.

• Hydrate: Dryness further aggravates haemorrhoids leading to bleeding. Hence, always use a wet tissue to wipe off. Secondly, consume more water than you usually do to soften stools. Similarly, soaking yourself in warm water every day for 15 minutes calms the inflamed region.

• Never hold in stools

• Avoid friction from dry paper wiping

• Wear loose, breathable clothes

• Don’t sit, but squat while passing stool
