Striving for Health Equity: Universal Health Coverage Day

Tuesday - December 12, 2023 2:49 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

December 12th marks an important day on the global health calendar as “Universal Health Coverage Day”. This day serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to ensure that everyone and everywhere has access to essential health services without facing any financial hardship. Universal health coverage (UHC) is a fundamental goal that addresses not only the right to health but also contributes to broader societal well-being and economic development. It encompasses a wide range of health services including preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative care. UHC is not limited to the availability of services but also focuses on their quality, accessibility and affordability.

UHC recognizes health as a fundamental human right. It emphasizes that every person   regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographical location, should have access to essential health services. One of the primary goals of UHC is to prevent people from falling into poverty due to healthcare expenses. Catastrophic health expenditures can push families into financial loss, UHC acts as a protective mechanism against such financial burdens.

Healthy populations are more productive and societies with widespread access to healthcare are better positioned for economic development. UHC contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering sustainable development.
