"Celebrating Harvest and Tradition: Pongal Week 2024"

Pongal is a traditional South Indian harvest festival that marks a time of gratitude, joy and celebration.  Pongal week includes communities across Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India who come together to honour the harvest and express their appreciation for nature's gifts. 
Day 1 (14th January), The Pongal week starts with Bhogi Pongal, a day dedicated to the ritual of discarding the old and welcoming the new. Homes are cleaned, decorated and people gather to burn old possessions symbolising the removal of negativity from their lives. Traditional bonfires which is known as 'Bhogi Mantalu,' are lit and families come together to celebrate the cleansing of the past and the anticipation of a fresh start.

Day 2 (15th January) is the main day of the festival, it is a time for expressing gratitude to the sun god for the abundant harvest. The highlight of the day is the preparation of the Pongal dish, a special sweet rice dish made with newly harvested rice, jaggery and milk. Families gather in the morning to cook Pongal in traditional clay pots, allowing it to boil over, symbolising prosperity and abundance. Temples are decorated with vibrant colours and special prayers.

Day 3 (16th January), Mattu Pongal is celebrated to the worship of cattle, which play a crucial role in agriculture. Farmers decorate their cattle with colourful garlands and perform traditional rituals to express their gratitude. Jallikattu is a traditional bull-taming sport which is a significant part of Mattu Pongal celebrations. Spectators from different parts of the region gather to witness the bravery of the participants and partake in the excitement of this ancient tradition.
