Ordnance Factories Day - A Pillar of India's Defense Infrastructure.

Monday - March 18, 2024 11:02 am , Category : WTN SPECIAL

Ordnance Factories Day in India is an occasion to celebrate the contributions of the country's ordnance factories to its defence capabilities. Held annually on the 18th of March, this day pays tribute to the relentless efforts of the personnel involved in the production of defence equipment and ammunition. It was established in 1775, the Indian Ordnance Factories (IOF) form a vital component of India's defence infrastructure, catering to the diverse needs of the armed forces.

The origins of Ordnance Factories Day trace back to the establishment of the first ordnance factory in India at Cossipore, Kolkata, in 1801 by the British East India Company. Over the years, these factories expanded across the nation, playing a crucial role in supporting various military campaigns and wars, including both World Wars and numerous conflicts thereafter. The Indian government recognised the importance of these facilities and designated March 18th as Ordnance Factories Day to honour their significant contributions.

It is a day to celebrate the dedication, innovation and resilience of the personnel who work tirelessly to ensure that the armed forces are equipped with the best-in-class weaponry and equipment. As India charts its course towards self-reliance in defence production, the ordnance factories will continue to serve as a cornerstone of its defence infrastructure, embodying the spirit of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India).
