World Food Day - A Call to Action for a Hunger Free World.

Wednesday - October 16, 2024 3:28 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

World Food Day is recognised annually on October 16th and it is a global initiative led by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The day marks the founding of the FAO in 1945 and highlights the critical issue of food security, with a focus on eradicating hunger and malnutrition. It serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure that everyone, everywhere, has access to nutritious food.

In 2024, the theme focuses on "Water is Life, Water is Food," emphasising the interdependence of water resources and food production. Water scarcity, poor irrigation and climate change impact agricultural yields, particularly in developing countries, exacerbating hunger. With nearly 2.4 billion people facing moderate to severe food insecurity globally, the urgency to act is clear. This year’s theme encourages sustainable agricultural practices, efficient water management, and global cooperation to improve food systems.

On this day, individuals, governments, organizations and communities unite to raise awareness and inspire action. Initiatives such as food drives, urban farming projects and educational programs are organised to promote sustainable practices and support vulnerable populations.

By addressing the root causes of hunger, World Food Day envisions a future where everyone has the right to eat healthily and live with dignity.
