The three month standoff between India and China over Doklam has ended with both the countries agreeing to withdraw troops. This come at a time when many were contemplating that India-China were heading towards war,
This decision is taken days before BRICS summit in China, which shall be attended by PM Narendra Modi and heads of state of BRICS. This comes as a big diplomatic victory of Modi government as it did not soften the stance on tri-junction area at Doklam which is in Bhutan. Rather, India had recently slapped an anti-dumping import duty on 93 Chinese imports.
China’s global exports are around $2,000 billion, out of which only $61 billion is to India (with trade surplus of nearly $51 billion). That signifies that for China, India is not very large trading partner, Still, China chose not to lock horns with India. This underlines the fact that India has now become a political power which not many nations would dare to confront.
India of 2017 is far different from 1965, wherein India was not well prepared of war. Today India has nuclear capability and a strong defense infrastructure. In case of any conflict with India, countries like America or even Russia would have supported India unlike 1965.
It is finally in interest of India and China to maintain harmonious political and robust economic relations. India must manage an aggressive China without an open conflict, just as Japan and Taiwan keep economic links growing despite contentious issues with China.
