National Sports Day- Showcasing sports women who have made India proud

The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29 August every year. This day marks the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand, the hockey legend who won gold medals for India in Olympics 1928, 1932 and 1936. On this day, WTN showcases some women sportspersons who have made an indelible mark in arena of sports. From PT Usha the "queen of Indian track and field" to PV Sindhu, who recently won silver in World Badminton Championship 2017, Indian women have won numerous laurels for India.
P T Usha- She lost bronze medal in 400 metre hurdles by one-hundredth of a second in 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She became an inspiration to many Indian women in track and field.
MC Mary Kom- She is a five-time World Amateur Boxing champion who fought poverty and took to sports to make her presence felt to the entire world. In 2008, she came back from a two-year maternity break to clinch her fourth boxing gold in World Championships. She became an inspiration to numerous women. Her quote “Don’t give up as there is always a next time. Think that if Mary Kom, a mother of two, can do it, why can’t you?” will always keep on inspiring women form all the sections of society and of all ages. A biographical sports film produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali was made on her life which starred Priyaka Chopra in a lead role.
Sania Mirza - She was the first woman who could make it to the fourth round of US Open Lawn Tennis Grand Slam Tournament in 2005. She is the highest-ranked female player ever from India, at world No. 27 WTA rank in singles. She has been World No. 1 WTA rank in doubles, the first Indian female to achieve the feat.
Saina Nehwal- Saina Nehwal is the first women in India's sporting history to reach the World No. 1 rank in Badminton. She became an inspiration to many girls, giving them confidence that Indian women can become a World Champion. Also, she became the first badminton player from India to win a medal at the Olympics and second woman to win Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari.
PV Sindhu- She is first Indian badminton sports player to win the silver medal in Olympics and second badminton player to win Olympic medal after Sania Nehwal.
Karnam Malleswari- She is the first woman in the history of Indian Olympics to win a medal. Even before her Olympic win, she was a two-time weightlifting world champion.
Mithali Raj- She is the captain of Indian Women cricket team and the highest run-scorer in women's international cricket. She recently led India to Women’s Cricket World Cup final.
Geeta Phogat- In 2012, she became India's first woman wrestler to qualify for the Olympics. She won India's first ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010.She has now become an inspiration to many girls in India to take up wrestling, in am male dominated society. Aamir Khan's film Dangal is based on her and her sister's (Babita Phogat) lives.
Sakshi Malik- She won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category at Rio Olympics in 2016 and became the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics.
Tania Sachdev- India women have started making their presence felt in Chess too. Tina holds World Chess Federation titles of International Master and Woman Grandmaster.
Dipa Karmakar- She is the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics. She missed out on the bronze medal, finishing 4th in the finals of the Rio Olympics in 2016. Her performance has made many Indian teenagers to consider Gymnastics as career.
Deepika Pallikal- She became the first Indian to break into the top 10 in the Official Women's Squash World Ranking. She won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 in the squash women's double event.
Heena Sidhu – Dentist from Punjab, she is flag bearer of women’s shooting sport in India. She became the first Indian pistol shooter to reach number one in world rankings by the International Shooting Sport Federation. Sidhu won the gold medal at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup Finals in Munich, Germany.
Shikha Tandon- She is a swimmer and has 36 medals in international competitions, including five gold medals.
These female sports stars and numerous others are a role model for young women around the country. They have encouraged the next generation of sportswomen to emulate these path breakers. Very soon India will see a gold medal from Indian sportswomen in Olympics.
