Women with Diabetes Suffer More Than Males : Dr. Sachin Gupta

Saturday - November 18, 2017 5:26 pm , Category : BHOPAL

“Many symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in women are the same as those in men; however, there are some symptoms and complications of diabetes unique to women. Diabetes can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or lifestyle; however, women may be at greater risk of the disease’s complications due to limited knowledge about symptoms and less caring nature for her.” said Dr. Shachin Gupta, renowned diabetologist at a press conference organised today at Hotel Amer Palace, Bhopal.

Dr. Gupta said “Both men and women with diabetes experience many of the same symptoms, such as increased thirst and hunger, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss or gain, blurred vision, and fatigue. However, women with diabetes may also experience other symptoms such as vaginal and oral yeast infections, itching or pain, urinary tract infection (UTI), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). These symptoms are not recognized by most women, and even by some healthcare professionals, as warning signs for diabetes. This lack of knowledge can result in the disease being initially misdiagnosed or even undiagnosed.”

He further said that “Diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease. Almost two-thirds of patients with diabetes die from cardiovascular disease. Recent studies suggest that death by heart failure is more common in women than in men. Many studies have also found that women with diabetes are at greater risk than men of kidney disease, depression, and high blood pressure.”

He also said that diabetes also affects men and women differently, with women being more susceptible to fatal heart disease. Further, pregnant women are urged to seek proper prenatal care, ensuring they have their blood sugar level tested.
Dr Gupta said, in general, women live longer than men do because they have a lower risk of heart disease, but when women develop diabetes, their risk for heart disease skyrockets, and death by heart failure is more likely in women than in men. Another study also found that in people with diabetes, heart attacks are more often fatal for women than they are for men. Kidney disease is another complication of type 1 diabetes, and type 2, that affect women more strongly than men.

Depression is twice as common in women with diabetes as it is in men with diabetes, similarly a diabetic female faces four times higher risk of developing heart ailments than men,  he said adding that women with diabetes are more prone to poor blood sugar control (which can lead to hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia), obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol than men with diabetes. Another issue woman with diabetes face is they are also at higher risk for problems getting pregnant, problems during pregnancy and repeated urinary and vaginal infections, Dr Gupta said.

Dr Gupta informed that in order to create awareness about diabetes a day long Diabetes Awareness Mela is being organised on Sunday 19 November 2017 at Shanti Van, Tulsi Nagar (Near Prakash Taran Pushkar) from 9 am onwards. Besides diabetologists the Mela will witness eye, heart and kidney experts who will do a free check up and advise to the patients. - Window To News
