Rock paintings provides a solid platform to know about the culture

On the second day of national seminar on "Rock Art of Central India: With Special Reference to Madhya Pradesh" was organized on 6th December, 2017 at IGRMS, Bhopal.

Several scholars presented their papers on various aspects on rock art of the central Indian region in relation to Madhya Pradesh. The 1st session of the day began at 10.30 in the morning. In this session a paper on Rock art sites in Chandheri Tehsil of Ashok Nagar District (M.P) was presented by Yadav Rakesh Parasnath, the paper gave an elaboration on the newly discovered rock art sites of the region describing shelters with white colored paintings at the site along with Trishul like designs painted with white colour. A presentation on the painted shelters in Dharkundi in Madhya Pradesh was given in her paper by Dr. Meenakshi Dubey Pathak.  Dr. Pushpendra Nandan gave a presentation on rock art of Satna District describing in detail the painted shelters found in the dense forested areas of the region. Ms. Neha Singh presented a paper on the yogini Mata shelter of sirmour region. Ms. Singh in her paper elaborated on the significance of cultural studies by saying that '"Culture can be defined as the ideas, customs and  behaviour of a particular people or society and it can be expressed in the form of dance, rituals, using of tools etc. Rock paintings provides a solid platform to know about the culture of early humans in the absence of literary records. 

In the evening session the paper by Dr. S. B. Ota on petroglyphs of Ladakh region was the highlight and explained the methods used to carve these images on boulders in the region. Dr. Ganga Nath Jha from Jharkhand presented a paper on ethno-archaeological aspect of rock art sites in Ramgarh region of Jharkhand. Dr. Jha said that the tradition of Rock Art is in diminishing stage due to the dumping yard of the coal excavation area. The present study also highlights the geographical condition of rock art and Cultural activities and Art of the population in-habiting the area. The indigenous people living in this area are unaware about the importance of this 'Likhni Rock Site' and Cultural Heritage. Due to regional faith they are practicing religious activities at this site and sacred performance and human Vandalism have added to the problems. For the preservation of this rock art site, there is an imperative need of experts and counseling of local people residing in the region. This study highlights the pros and cons of the discovered site in the National and International Scenario and its importance and value by making the indigenous group aware about this Rock Shelter Art.

The session concluded with the paper by Prof. Somnath Chakraverty and Dr. Ruman Banerjee, this paper elaborated extensively on the landscape of rock art in Madhya Pradesh and its distribution pattern and the sites with dense concentration of sites. Prof. Ravi Korisettar was the chairperson at the session.-Windowtonews
