Odisha's "Murudung" is Exhibit of the Month of April

Bhopal: Under the popular museum series 'Exhibit of the Month' of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, a traditional object is displayed in the appearance for a whole month. The exhibit for the month of April, 2018 is "Murudung" (An Indigenous Khond musical percussion drum). Ms. Priyanka Das, IAS (Commissioner, Bhopal Municipal Corporation) & Shri. K. Satish Nambudiripad, IIS (Additional Director General & Head, Electonic Media Monitoring Centra, Min. O Information & Broadcasting, GOI) jointly inaugurated Exhibit of the month at Veethi Sankul indoor exhibition building. On this occasion Prof. Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri, (Director, IGRMS) was also present. This exhibit of the month has been curetted by Dr. P. Shankara Rao (Assistant Keeper).
The Khonds or Kandha's constituted one of the principal aborigines of the hills of Rayagada district in Odisha. The district is a home land of various tribal communities along with their sub-tribes, who are predominantly found in different levels of development from hunter gatherers, shifting cultivators to settled peasantry. In which Khonds are one of the tribal community inhabited in the Eastern Ghats in Rayagada district of Southern Odisha. The Khond or Kandha is the largest tribe of the Odisha state in terms of population; Khonds call themselves 'Kui' which is "Kuinga" in the plural form. The music of Khond tribe is very popular and is an indigenous in nature, amused themselves in various ways particularly such as marriages, religious festivals, bhajans etc. This musical object offers a variety of detail facts i.e. socio, cultural, ethno-musical and indigenous knowledge of this tribe shaped by its cultural context.-Window To News
