Press Conference was held today by Dr. Nishant Shrivastava of Gandhi Medical College on the occasion of “World Asthma Week”. Dr Shrivastava told that while there is no formal study but it is anticipated that more than 1.5 lakh patients of asthma exist in Bhopal and nearly 2.5 percent of population of India is suffering from asthma or allergies. What is alarming is the fact that the children born after 1980 are likely to have more chances of allergies and asthma due to increased pollution as number of vehicles have increased.
Explaining “Dust Theory” Dr Shrivastava was of opinion that children should be allowed to play in parks and other outdoor activities should be made compulsory for children. As children play outside and get exposed to dust, they become immune to allergies and develop a body mechanism to fight against allergies and asthma.
“Genetic asthma is difficult to cure but acquired asthma by allergens and pollens can be arrested by taking proper medication and inhalers, If the patient is able to control asthma, he/she can live a happy life” said Dr Shrivastava . He further added , “It is important to understand the know your lung number and why inhalation therapy is the most effective therapy to control asthma and breathless. This World Asthma Day, we urge people who are asthmatic or feel breathless should get the spirometry test, a first step to understand asthma symptoms. Myths associated with the treatment needs to be busted. Inhaled corticosteroids have been recognized and widely accepted as the mainstay of asthma management.”
Mr Pawan Guru, a Yoga specialist who also addressed the press conference said that yoga can help patients to lessen the impact of asthma. Yoga should be done properly in limited time frame. 45 minute time duration is good enough for asanas, pranayam, meditation and savasana put together.
