Public awareness must for prevention of sickle cell disease: Governor Patel

Bhopal 02 November 2021: Governor Mangubhai Patel has said that combined work should be done at all levels for the prevention of sickle cell anemia disease in the state. In universities and colleges, students should be made aware of sickle cell anemia disease through doctors. He stressed the need for efforts to generate public awareness regarding the disease in conferences and community programmes.

Governor Patel was addressing a meeting related to the development of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes at Raj Bhavan. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Public Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Prabhuram Choudhary, Tribal Affairs and Scheduled Castes Welfare Minister Meena Singh, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Minister Bisahulal Singh were also present.

Governor Patel appreciated the efforts being made by the state government for identification of sickle cell anemia disease. He said that along with the survey, public awareness work should be done on a large scale. As far as efforts for prevention is concerned, priority should be given to the areas where the nature of the problem is more. Efforts should also be made for the examination and treatment of pregnant women. He said that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, for the first time institutional efforts were made in the country to control this genetic disease, which has yielded good results. Gujarat's experiences should be used in the state.

Chief Minister Chouhan said that the state government is committed to eradicate sickle cell disease. He said that the state government is doing the work of tribal welfare in mission mode. He said that the effective efforts and excellent work done by the state of Gujarat in the field of sickle cell anemia disease control would be followed in the state. The road map for the work is being prepared in a phased manner. Efforts to control the disease will be made in an institutionalized manner. The outline of the work is being prepared in coordination with Tribal Welfare and Health Department.

Regarding the efforts to control sickle cell anemia in Gujarat, expert Dr. Yazdi Italia told in his presentation that Gujarat is the first state in the country to have included sickle cell anemia control programme in the medical services of the state government in the year 2006.
