Governor Patel Discusses with the Department of Health and AYUSH
Bhopal 08 February 2022: Governor Mangubhai Patel has said that everyone's cooperation and efforts are necessary in the treatment and management of sickle cell anaemia. Concerted efforts have been made by the government. The cooperation of the society is also necessary to make these efforts more effective. Efforts should be made from all levels of government and non-government for the work of disease survey to be done at a fast pace. He told that he himself would also get information about the work being done under the Sickle Cell Mission during his stay in Alirajpur.
Governor Patel was discussing various aspects of sickle cell anaemia disease treatment and management at Raj Bhavan. Minister Public Health and Family Welfare Prabhuram Choudhary, Minister of State AYUSH Independent Charge Ram Kishore Kanwre, Additional Secretary to Governor Manoj Khatri and other officers were present on the occasion.
Governor Mangubhai Patel said that a large part of the tribal population in the state has been shown to be affected by sickle cell anaemia genetic disease. It is a very painful and deadly disease. If the disease is diagnosed at an early age the better treatment management can be done. He said that doctors in America are exploring the possibilities of treatment if sickle cell is detected in pregnancy. If the disease is detected within 78 hours of birth, then the possibilities of preventing organ malformation have also been told. Therefore, it is necessary that the work of disease survey should be done with fast speed and comprehensiveness. He said that efforts for widespread public awareness regarding the disease are necessary. The universities of the state have also been asked to cooperate in this work. He said that Anganwadi centres should also be involved in disease survey work. By giving necessary training to the worker of the centre, cooperation should be taken in the investigation work of pregnant women.
Referring to a discussion with a 30-year-old sickle cell anaemia patient, Patel said that a healthy and better life can be lived through proper lifestyle, diet and regular medicine. The need is for proper counselling regarding sickle cell anaemia. He said that Ayurveda has the ability to eliminate disease from its root. Research should be done on the possibilities of research and treatment by other systems of medicine like Ayurveda and Homeopathy in the treatment of sickle cell disease.
The Governor was informed that research work is being done by the Homeopathy College in Shahdol, Mandla, Dindori and Chhindwara districts since last one year. In a total of 21 thousand 5 hundred people, 1271 sickle cell patients are being treated through homeopathy. Anaemia, pain and swelling decreased in patients under treatment. The need for blood donation has also decreased. He said that after examining these results in the next one year, the results of the study would be obtained. It was apprised by the Department of AYUSH that a project for research of sickle cell disease has been prepared in all the seven government ayurvedic colleges of the state. The process of starting a pilot project in coordination with AYUSH practitioners and ICMR Jabalpur is in progress. It was informed by the Medical Department that in Alirajpur and Jhabua, a pilot project is being conducted to examine 8 lakh 26 thousand children and pregnant mothers in the age group of zero to 18 years. The investigation work is being done by the Health Department. To increase the pace of investigation, a private organisation will be added soon. The work of public awareness is being done by the Jan Abhiyan Parishad. The distribution of genetic counselling cards has started.
