Sickle Cell Screening Work Should Be Done By Making a Strategy
Governor Patel Held Virtual Discussions with Central Officials and Experts
Bhopal 05 March 2022: Governor Mangubhai Patel has said that a strategy should be chalked out for the screening of sickle disease. Check by conducting sickle cell anaemia screening camps in schools and colleges of tribal areas. In the results of the test, the parents of the children affected by the disease should also be examined. Anganwadi workers should be involved in the checking of pregnant mothers. This will increase the speed of work and also save time. Also treatment and management work will be better. He said that the good fortune of serving humanity comes from the grace of God. The blessings of God always remain on those who do it with sensitivity.
Governor Patel was discussing through virtual medium with the Union Joint Secretary Tribal Affairs Dr. Navaljit Kapoor and subject-experts regarding the road map prepared by the Central Government for eradication of sickle cell anemia disease today. Principal Secretary to Governor D.P. Ahuja, Commissioner Public Health and Family Welfare Dr. Sudam Khade, Commissioner Tribal Affairs Sanjeev Singh, Mission Director National Health Mission Smt. Priyanka Das and Project Director Tribal Research Institute Ravindra Choudhary were present at Raj Bhavan.
Union Joint Secretary Dr. Navaljit Kapoor informed that pre-natal testing is necessary in the immediate efforts to control sickle cell anaemia. In long-term measures, an action plan has been made to prevent infection and complications and provide vaccination through neo-natal screening of children born with sickle cell anaemia disease to make disease screening more effective in the target population.
Work is being done on the management of pain and other complications for disease treatment management and long-term treatment efforts such as the use of bone marrow transplant and crisper technology, the resources required, the authenticity of other systems and research possibilities. Arrangements are also being made to issue permanent disability certificates for proper arrangements for disability related facilities.
Strategies for creating a database of screening of target population, public awareness, training programmes and research related arrangements have been prepared. He said that further action is being taken by examining the usefulness and feasibility of various methods of testing work like Point of Care Test, POC Rapid Test and POC with Portable Machine. Along with screening of pregnant mothers in the first trimester, screening of husbands in case of disease carriers and C.V.S. sequencing if both are found to be carriers and counseling of child with sickle cell disease, the work of screening of adolescents of 10 to 25 years and unmarried youths of the target population will be done.
Dr. Kapoor said that due to sickle cell disease, 20 percent of the children of the tribal society die by the age of 2 years and 30 percent by the age of 25 years. The average age of a person with sickle cell disease is less than 30 years. It was told that sickle cell disease is the cause of many problems like poverty, education barrier, social stigma due to increase in infant mortality, health related problems, anaemia, organ damage, sepsis, pregnancy complications as well as loss of work capacity. 60 to 70 percent of children suffering from sickle cell disease are not able to take education even till higher secondary.
Paediatrician Dr. Anupam Sachdev said that the Nobel Prize winning technique of the year 2020 is being tested for its medical and practical utility in the country. Director CSIR Dr. Anurag Aggarwal informed that under the aegis of Infomedico, the research project in alternative medicine is going on in Nandurbar. PK Patra, Director, Sickle Cell Institute Chhattisgarh, Dr. Manisha Medhakar of NIH Mumbai and Dr. Shailendra Hegde of Piramal Swasthya also informed about the work being done in the field of sickle cell anaemia disease treatment and management.
