Sanitary Napkin Pads Being Made in Villages by Women of Rural Areas

Bhopal: About 2 lakh 50 thousand Sanitary napkin pads per month are being made by groups of 2149 women belonging to poor families in villages after obtaining training from self-help groups of Rural Livelihood Mission. Their product’s quality besides attractive packing is not less than the products of any multinational company.

Sanitary napkins have become a favourite choice among the urban customers of Gurgaon Mall. It is believed in general that low educated women of rural families are only well-versed with traditional works like agriculture activities besides animal husbandry. Now these rural women have written a new story producing sanitary napkins linking themselves with the self-help groups of state livelihood mission. This activity is facilitating new possibilities of economic strengthening in the rural areas.

In order to provide middle-man less market to livelihood products of rural women, work on the lines of direct village to consumer is being carried out. Chief Executive Officer State Rural Livelihood Mission L.M. Belwal informed that 20 lakh 67 thousand 765 poor families have been linked to One lakh 79 thousand 615 self-help groups till today since start of the Mission. From this 13 lakh 22 thousand 084 families are being benefitted linking them with the activities of agriculture, N.T.F.T., animal husbandry, personal and micro entrepreneurship activities and over One lakh 29 thousand families have come under the lakhpati category.

It may be mentioned that women linked with the groups are encouraging women for using sanitary napkins generating awareness towards sanitation and health at community level in rural areas. Sanitary pads are being supplied regularly by the members of the groups through aaganbadi centers and personal contacts. Increase in demand is witnessed in the villages owing to low cost in comparison to market rate and easy availability of the product. There is no doubt in accepting that women of rural areas of Madhya Pradesh are competent to undertake new works now along with traditional activities like agriculture, animal husbandry etc.-WTN
