Ex-Tehran Mayor sentenced to death for killing wife

Tehran, July 30 (IANS) Former Tehran Mayor Mohammad Ali Najafi has been sentenced to death for killing his wife, officials said on Tuesday.Najafi's second wife Mitra Ostad was shot dead at her home in the northern district of the Iranian capital on May 28. Najafi confessed to the murder of his wife, saying that family dispute was the cause of the murder. He is an Iranian reformist politician who has been the Mayor of Tehran for eight months till April 2018.The sentence can be appealed in the country's Supreme Court, Iran's Judiciary spokesman Gholam Hossein Esmaili was quoted as saying by official IRNA news agency.Before his detention on May 28, he was serving as an advisor in the Cabinet of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
