North, S. Korean women urge Trump to stop war rhetoric

Seoul April 26 (IANS) A group of women from North and South Koreas along with women activists from other countries sent on Wednesday a letter to US President Donald Trump urging him to stop his war rhetoric.

The activists of the group Women Cross DMZ asked Trump to prevent a military escalation in the Korean peninsula Efe news reported.

Peace is the most powerful deterrent of all read the letter signed by the activists including Irish Nobel peace laureate Mairead Maguire and Gloria Steinem a Jewish writer journalist and a feminist icon in the US.

President Trump could demonstrate his art of deal-making by advancing what will and has only ever worked: diplomacy and engagement according the letter that was published online.

It added that a dialogue with Pyongyang would be a real benchmark of success for the new US administration.

A statement by Women Cross DMZ said: We are united by our belief that diplomacy is the only way to resolve the nuclear crisis and threat of war now facing the Korean Peninsula.

The group came to the spotlight in 2015 when they crossed the DMZ the heavily-militarised border between the two Koreas to promote peace and reconciliation in the peninsula.

Tension in the Korean Peninsula has been growing since the beginning of April due to repeated missile tests by North Korea and Trump s war-mongering rhetoric as well as show of military might by both sides.
