Italian government launches website to honour mafia victims

Rome May 16 (IANS/AKI) The Italian government Tuesday unveiled a web page honouring victims of the mafia on the ninth anniversary of the Camorra s brutal murder of Naples businessman Domenico Noviello.

The web page accessible from the Interior Ministry website is aimed at publicising more effectively the Italian state s efforts to show solidarity towards victims of all kinds of mafia crime and to boost the involvement of civil society in the fight against the mafia the ministry said.

The launch of the web page entitled Testimonies of courage coincides with events taking place in the Naples mafia stronghold of Castel Volturno on Tuesday to honour Noviello who owned a local driving school.

Noviello was shot dead in an ambush on May 16 2008 after reporting members of the Camorra s Bignotti to police for extortion.

The square in Castel Volturno where Noviello was sprayed with at least 20 bullets has been re-named after him. And in 2009 Italy s then-president Giorgio Napolitano awarded him a posthumous medal of civic honour.
