Maneka welcomes SC verdict reassuring death to Nirbhaya convicts
New Delhi July 9 (IANS) Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court s verdict upholding the death sentence to four men in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case and said she was "satisfied" with the verdict.
"I am satisfied with the SC that upheld the death sentence of the Nirbhaya gangrape murder convicts " Gandhi said.
The SC bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra Justice R. Banumathi and Justice Ashok Bhushan dismissed the convicts plea for a review of the May 5 2017 verdict upholding the death sentence.
The Minister said the new ordinance providing for death penalty to convicts involved in rape of minor will act as a deterrent against such crimes.
"A Madhya Pradesh court recently awarded death sentence in a rape case involving a minor girl. This is the first verdict after the new law came into force. The stringent measures taken by government are working hopefully " she added.
