Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee dies at Kolkata

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee passed away on Monday morning. He was 89 years old. He was admitted to the Kolkata hospital on August 9 after kidney disease. PM Narendra Modi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi Condoles Chaterjee’s desmise.
Former MP and Speaker Shri Somnath Chatterjee was a stalwart of Indian politics. He made our Parliamentary democracy richer and was a strong voice for the well-being of the poor and vulnerable. Anguished by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and supporters.

According to reports, Chatterjee had a heart attack during dialysis on Sunday morning. His health was not good for a few months. In July, he was brought to a private hospital after hemorrhagic stroke. Then he underwent treatment for 40 days. On August 6, there was a discharge from the hospital. Chatterjee has been a Lok Sabha MP for 10 times. He was speaker of Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009 in the UPA-led UPA-1 government.

In 2008, the CPI (M) withdrew support to the UPA government on the issue of Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal. During this time, Chatterjee refused to resign as a Lok Sabha Speaker. After this he was ousted from the CPI (M).
