Japan to hold evacuation drill amid N.Korea missile threat

Tokyo : The Japanese government is planning its first ever evacuation drill to prepare residents for the possible launch of a ballistic missile by North Korea, the media reported on Thursday.
The drill will be conducted in Oga city in Akita prefecture on March 17, public broadcaster NHK reported.
Personnel from the Cabinet Secretariat and fire and disaster management agency are expected to take part.
North Korea launched more than 20 ballistic missiles in 2016. One of them landed off the coast of Akita.
The country has also suggested that it may test-fire an intercontinental ballistic missile.
In the emergency drill's scenario, a section of a ballistic missile fired from outside the country falls on Japanese territory.
The government plans to conduct an actual evacuation during the drill. Residents will be told to evacuate to sturdy structures using the "J-ALERT" warning system and wireless public address systems.
Japan enacted a law in 2004 aimed at protecting the public in the event of emergencies. The government has since conducted annual exercises to safeguard residents from terrorist attacks and other threats.-Agency
