Jammu April 14 (IANS) Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Girish Chandra Saxena passed away on Friday in New Delhi official sources said here. He was 90.

Former state Governor Girish Chandra Saxena passed away today after a brief illness in New Delhi. He was 90 a source said.

An Indian Police Service officer of the 1950 batch from the Uttar Pradesh cadre Saxena was Governor from May 26 1990 till March 13 1993.

He served another term as the J&K governor from 1998 to 2003.

Saxena succeeded Jagmohan who was removed after 30 people were killed in security force firing on the funeral procession of Mirwaiz Maulvi Farooq in May 1990.

The revival of state police as part of the security grid to fight militancy in the state is largely attributed to Saxena s long years of experience in police service and as chief of India s foreign intelligence wing.

Head of India s foreign intelligence agency the Research and Analysis Wing from 1983 to 1986 he subsequently served as advisor to then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Saxena was the elder brother of Naresh Chandra former cabinet secretary and Indian ambassador to the US.
