Leader of carlifter gang held in Delhi

New Delhi April 27 (IANS) A kingpin of an inter-state gang of automobile thieves was arrested in west Delhi in the early hours of Thursday after a scuffle with two beat constables who were fired upon by the accused police said.

Irshad 25 heads a gang from Mewat region of Haryana and had come to Delhi to steal high-end cars as well as trucks police said.

Police said the constables hailed a Swift Desire car moving in the Kirti Nagar area under suspicious circumstances to stop around 2 a.m. Its five occupants in the age group of 25-30 years assaulted constables Vijay Kumar and Sandeep Kumar.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said that during the scuffle Irshad opened fire at the constables but missed.

While he was reloading his countrymade pistol he was overpowered with the help of two locals. Police are trying to arrest his four accomplices who escaped from the spot.
