Left leader calls for tripartite meeting to end Darjeeling impasse

Darjeeling June 22 (IANS) Left Front Convener in Darjeeling district Jibesh Sarkar on Thursday urged for a meeting between central and West Bengal governments and the Gorkha Janmukhi Morcha (GJM) to restore peace in the state s hills.

A tripartite meeting is needed to resolve the impasse. Neither the government s use of force nor the indefinite strike by the GJM is solution to the problem he said.

The CPI(M)-led Left Front was the first to decide to skip the all-party meeting called by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Sarkar had said it would serve no purpose.

The GJM is spearheading the agitation for separate Gorkhaland state in the north Bengal hills.

Sarkar said the move to suspend Internet service and all regional news channels in the region is against the right to information adding several students in the hills were deprived of online admissions to schools and colleges.
