Centre seeks withdrawal of paramilitary from Darjeeling

New Delhi Oct 25 (IANS) The central government on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court seeking the withdrawal of central security forces from trouble-torn Darjeeling in West Bengal where an agitation for a Gorkhaland has taken violent turns.

The central government has challenged the Calcutta High Court order putting on hold the Centre s decision to withdraw 10 of the 15 companies of the central security forces deployed in the hill district.

A bench headed by Justice J. Chelameswar directed the listing of the central government s petition for hearing on Friday after government s law officer advocate S. Wasim Ahmed Qadri sought an early hearing.

Qadri told the court that the central government required to withdraw its security forces for deployment on disturbed borders Jammu and Kashmir and on the border with Myanmar.

The Calcutta High Court had acted on a petition by the West Bengal government.
