Brazilian midfielder Wendel joins Sporting Lisbon

Rio de Janeiro Jan 7 (IANS) Sporting Lisbon announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Wendel on a six-year deal worth 10 million euros ($12 million).

The Portuguese outfit reportedly beat off interest from a host of European clubs including Paris Saint-Germain Porto and CSKA Moscow reports Xinhua news agency.

"I m very grateful to the club for fighting to get me here " Wendel said in a statement on Sporting s official website on Saturday. "I m fulfilling a dream by coming here and I hope to help bring success for the fans."

Wendel played 58 matches and scored seven goals for Rio de Janeiro side Fluminense in 2017 after being promoted from the club s youth ranks.

Sporting are currently second in Portugal s first division standings two points behind leaders Porto.
