Asuncion May 12 (IANS) Alejandro Dominguez was unanimously re-elected on Friday as president of the South American footall confederation Conmebol at its 69th annual congress here.

Dominguez 46 a Paraguayan national was the only candidate for the position. He was reelected with the votes of the 10 delegation countries that make up the Conmebol: Argentina Bolivia Brazil Chile Colombia Ecuador Paraguay Peru Uruguay and Venezuela reports Efe.

Laureano Gonzalez from Venezuela was elected first vice president of the Conmebol council Argentine Claudio Tapia was elected second vice president and Chilean Arturo Salah was chosen as third vice president.

"I appreciate the vote of confidence and I assume my responsibility. I would like to recall that two years ago when the previous election was held the organization (Conmebol) had lost its way it was morally bankrupt and had forgotten about soccer " Dominguez said.

The ceremony was attended by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

In March the Conmebol council called for new elections to take place on May 11 and urged Dominguez to run again with the goal of "consolidating the reforms that his administration has established to make South American soccer more professional institutional and transparent."
