New Zealand led the three-match series 1-0 after almost throwing away a winning position in the opening match after Marcus Stoinis' other-worldly heroics.
The second match was a farcical washout, with the Napier outfield refusing to dry despite little rain throughout the matchday.
Australia threatened to replicate the first-ODI comeback in Hamilton, but fell 24 runs short of the Black Caps' total of 281.
