Bayer Leverkusen appoints Tayfun Korkut as head coach

Berlin March 6 (IANS) Turkish coach Tayfun Korkut was on Monday named the new coach of German side Bayer Leverkusen until the end of the season replacing Roger Schmidt who was fired a day earlier.

Korkut has a mission to lead the team to a position in the Bundesliga standings that allows it a place in one of the European competitions amid a disappointing season so far reports Efe.

Schmidt was dismissed in the aftermath of the 2-6 Bundesliga thrashing by Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Previously Korkut trained Bundesliga sides Hannover 96 and Kaiserslautern.

Along with the league commitment Korkut will lead the team into a mission impossible against Atletico Madrid at Vicente Calderon during the second leg of the Champions League s knockouts after a 2-4 home defeat.
