Qawwali is the worship of God for us: Warsi Brothers

MAR 01 (WTN) – The Warsi Brothers, world-famous for their Qawwalis, are not fond of any introduction. The Warsi Brothers, who hail from Hyderabad, have given a new identity to the Qawwali. Qawwali is a kind of prayer for the Warsi Brothers. The Warsi Brothers, in collaboration with the SPIC MACAY Bhopal Chapter, gave a mind-blowing performance in the Sham-e-Qawwali program at the People's University, Bhopal. On this occasion, the WTN team interviewed the Warsi Brothers and got to know the Qawwali and its details.

WTN - Although Qawwali has now become an important part of Indian music. But even if we look at the history of Qawwali, when and how did Qawwali begin in India?

Warsi Brothers – See, the history of Qawwali is very old in India. Qawwali means 'say' or 'to praise'. The introduction of Qawwali singing in India is said to be started by Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. When Khwaja arrived in Ajmer, he first sang Ghazals in Persian, which he sang in Qawwali style. By the way, some people believe that the practice of singing Qawwali in India has started since the time of Amir Khusro. However, it has not been possible to establish who started the practice of singing Qawwali in India, but it is certain that the tradition of Qawwali singing has come into existence with the Sufi tradition in India.

WTN - Qawwali is sung in many other countries besides India. But what is the major difference between the Qawwali of India and the Qawwali of other countries?

Warsi Brothers - Due to the rich singing tradition of India, the Qawwali singing tradition in India is quite different from other countries. In India, Qawwali singing has a different point due to ragas. In the old times, Qawwali was sung only with spiritual feeling, but in modern times, Qawwali is also sung on many other emotions like love.

WTN - Where did you get the inspiration for singing the Qawwali, and what is your special focus more while singing Qawwali?

Warsi Brothers - Both our father and grandfather had mastered singing the Qawwali from the blessing of God. It is from our elders that we got the inspiration to sing Qawwali. Right from childhood, we listened and kept learning Qawwalis. My father and my grandfather were my masters, from whom I learned the nuances of Qawwali. As far as the special focus is concerned while singing the Qawwali, it is our best effort that whatever we sing in the prayer of God, we ought to sing it wholeheartedly and take full care of ragas.

WTN - Many times, people do not understand the difference between the Ghazal and Qawwali. After all, what is the basic difference between the Ghazal and Qawwali?

Warsi Brothers – You asked a good question. Actually, Ghazal is a genre of poetry, while the Qawwali is a method of singing. Actually, Ghazal is an excellent confluence of emotion and words, in which three things, words, patterns, and voices matter a lot. At the same time, Qawwali is a complete example of the great Indian tradition of unity. The Qawwali is sung with songs, bhajans, couplets, verses, nazam, shayari, and much more.

WTN - In the current atmosphere of tension in the country, in such a situation, do you give some messages to the people through your Qawwali for national unity?

Warsi Brothers - In India, everyone should live together in brotherhood. We also try to give the message of national unity to the people. We have prepared a presentation of Qawwali by the name of Bharat-India-Hindustan, through which we try to convey the message of national unity in the country.
