Madhya Pradesh’s Eight Cities Included in Top 25

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh’s eight states have been selected under the ‘Swachch Sarvekshan -2017’ conducted in 500 cities of the country for making best efforts towards sanitation. These cities include Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Ujjain, Khargone, Sagar, Rewa and Pithampur. President Municipalities and Mayors Municipal Corporations of these cities will be honoured in New Delhi on May 4. Union Minister for Urban Development Shri Venkaiah Naidu will announce the category under which these cities are honoured in a programme to be held at New Delhi.
Minister for Urban Development Smt. Maya Singh informed that sanitation survey was conducted between January to March this year. The survey of 500 Amrut cities of the country was conducted which have population of over One lakh or are important in view of tourism. A total of 34 cities of Madhya Pradesh were included in the survey. Smt. Singh further informed that as per the directives of the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan ‘Hamara Shahar No. 1’ campaign was launched.
An officer was appointed for monitoring at directorate level organising a workshop.
Awareness towards sanitation was generated among the people through advertisement and short films. Due to collective efforts eight cities are included in top 25 cities list and will be honoured in different categories.
Minister Smt. Maya Singh said that a total of 136 cities of Madhya Pradesh have been declared open defecation free till now. Remaining 209 cities will be declared open defecation free in next two months. A budget provision of Rs. 600 crore has been made in 2017-18 under Swachcha Bharat Mission. P.P.P. based Integrated Solid Waste Management Scheme is being implemented dividing all the urban bodies of the state into 26 clusters under the mission.-WTN
