Last 200 yrs destructive for 454 crore year old Earth
Media workshop on bio-diversity conservation and awareness

Bhopal: Last 200 years have been the most destructive for the nearly 454 crore year old Earth. Out of 50 lakh species, only man has destroyed the other species. To save life on Earth, the planning for development must be made keeping in mind the circumstantial set-up. Today this negligence has resulted in incidents like Kedarnath and Chennai floods and air pollution in Delhi. This was said by State Bio-Diversity Board Member Secretary R. Nivasamurthy at a media workshop on “Bio-Diversity Conservation and Awareness”.

India a part of International Bio-Diversity Treaty

Murthy said that the direct rays of the sun falling on the Earth is destructive. After 1 crore years of evolution, life began on Earth following the creation of the ozone layer. Development against nature polluted rivers, water, air and circumstantial set-up due to which not only the ozone layer adversely affected but it also resulted in destructive natural calamities. The United States held an International Bio-Diversity Treaty/Conference in the year 1992 in Brazil. About 196 countries have joined the treaty. India is among 12 Mega Bio-diverse countries out of which Madhya Pradesh is a leading state.

Indians are fortunate

Murthy said that Indians are fortunate compared to other countries, because here there is ample light of the Sun, water and fertile land. The Earth, rivers do not need us, we need them. One must not become a part of climate change by polluting air and river by burning Narwai. Bio-diversity is most essential for food, water and health protection.

Over 400 committees are working in the state to protect bio-diversity. These committees will also assist in the massive tree plantation on July 2. Bamboo, Mahua, Arjun on river banks, jackfruit, lemon, mango in houses and Bargad, neem, pipal saplings will be planted in villages. Trees return 99 per cent used water in the form of moisture and water.

Topics discussed between the Board and the Media included Bio-diversity Act 2002, Bio-diversity Act 2004, Madhya Pradesh Bio-diversity Act 2004, Access to Biological Resources and Knowledge and Benefit Sharing Regulations 2014, Bio-diversity Conservation, convectional use of bio-diversity, Bio-diversity management committees and apportionment of the benefits of commercial use of bio-diversity. Print and electronic representatives suggested holding such workshops in every three months.
