Prevention of Blindness Week.

Every year, the world observes Prevention of Blindness Week, a significant occasion aimed at raising awareness about the causes of blindness and visual impairment and promoting strategies to prevent them. This week serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of vision health and underscores the need for concerted efforts to prevent avoidable blindness. From April 1st to April 7th, communities, healthcare professionals and organisations worldwide come together to educate, advocate and take action to safeguard the precious gift of sight.

Vision plays a fundamental role in our daily lives, influencing how we learn, work and interact with the world. Millions of people around the globe suffer from vision impairment or blindness due to preventable causes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) approximately 80% of all visual impairment can be avoided or cured with early detection and intervention.

The key causes of visual impairment have several factors that contribute to visual impairment and blindness like, Refractive Errors, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Retinopathy.

So, the vision during Prevention of Blindness Week presents an opportunity to promote various strategies for maintaining good vision and preventing avoidable blindness, by regular eye examinations, raise awareness by educating communities about the importance of vision health, giving access to eye care services, promote healthy lifestyles, eye safety like having importance of eye protection in preventing injuries, particularly in occupational settings, during sports activities and while engaging in household tasks.
