World Literacy Day - Empowering Minds and Transforming Futures:

Monday - September 9, 2024 3:01 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

Literacy is more than just the ability to read and write. It is a gateway to opportunities which allows individuals to fully participate in society, access better job prospects and engage with the world around them. Literacy empowers people to understand their rights and make informed decisions and contribute to their communities. For nations, literacy helps drive economic growth, reduces inequality and provides a more inclusive society.

Each year on September 8, the world comes together to celebrate International Literacy Day. Established by UNESCO in 1966, this day highlights the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a cornerstone for personal and societal development. It is a day to reflect on the progress made towards eradicating illiteracy and to recognise the ongoing challenges many face in gaining access to education.

Several initiatives around the world are addressing literacy issues, particularly in marginalised and underserved communities.

The Global Partnership for Education (GPE), This organisation works to ensure that every child receives a quality education, particularly in developing countries. It supports governments in improving their education systems and invests in teacher training, learning materials and infrastructure.

Pratham, An innovative Indian NGO, Pratham has been a trailblazer in improving literacy in the country. Its Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) provides critical insights into the state of education in India and drives grassroots-level improvements.

The road to literacy for all is a shared responsibility. Governments, civil society organisations, businesses and individuals must work together to ensure that education systems are inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of background.
