Drought Relief Team Interacted with Officers and Villagers to Know Drought’s Effects in Gwalior District

Bhopal: Central Drought Relief Team deliberated with the Collector and Departmental Officers as regard to the situation emerged from the scanty rains in the Gwalior district on Wednesday. The team also interacted with the villagers by conducting tour of the rural areas. Collector Rahul Jain apprised the team that the damage has caused to the crops of the farmers due to the scanty rains. Beside this, potable water problem has also surfaced. He informed that crops have not been sown in about 48 percent of the area because of the scanty rains. Where the crop has been sowed, the villagers are facing shortage of water for drinking and irrigation purpose.
The shortage of potable water is being felt in the urban and rural areas. Potable water is distributed from the Tighra reservoir in the Gwalior city. Keeping in view the water shortage in the dam, work to supply water to Tighra is being carried out by pumping water from the Kaketo Dam. Amount has been made available by the government for this activity. Water pumping work costing Rs. 9 crore 35 lakh has been started after the approval of the tender.
Moreover, the Collector informed that the rural areas are also facing water shortage. Water is not being supplied in the rural areas at present. A detail action plan has been prepared for water distribution in the rural areas. Works are being carried out under the MNREGA in the rural areas to provide employment to the villagers. Total 12 thousand 868 works are in progress in the district. Moreover, 171 new ponds have been constructed in the district. In order to provide employment to the people, process to get the works sanctioned under the MNREGA is being undertaken constantly. The members of the Drought Relief Team said that special attention should be paid to ensure maximum benefit of the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme to the farmers.

The Drought Relief Team visited village Barkhera of Ghatigaon block-district Gwalior and interacted with the farmers. The team visited the agriculture field of the farmer Charan Singh Adiwasi to take stock of the crop. The farmers informed that urad had been sown by them but the scanty rains has caused destruction to the entire crop. At present, the gram cop has been sown by the farmers. The gram crop is also in bad condition due to the scanty rains. Moreover, the farmers informed that the entire farming is affected in the area by the scanty rains and potable water problem is also emerging. The team also inspected Smt. Angoori Devi’s field and was told about the complete damage to the crop by her.
Furthermore, the Drought Relief Team also visited village Aron and discussed about the drought situation with the farmers at Panchayat Bhavan. The farmers told the team that their entire crops have been affected by the scanty rains. Beside this, the team was also told about the unavailability of water in the hand pump. It was informed during the discussions that the water level in the village has dropped to 280 feet. Women of the village also apprised the team about the water and employment problem. Sarpanch Smt. Rajni Atul Sharma informed in detail about the situation emerging in the village due to scanty rains.
Later on, the Drought Relief Team also visited Kaketa Dam to take the stock of the situation. Work is being carried out to supply water by pumping to Tighra Dam of Gwalior.
