Purchase price of sugarcane in Chhindwara fixed at Rs 300 per quintal

Bhopal: Chhindwara district is a multi-crop zone. Various crops are grown using traditional and scientific methods. One of these crops is sugarcane. The sugarcane yield in the district has its distinct identity. In a meeting with the mill owners and farmers, the district administration had a long discussion with them over the sugarcane producers’s problems and the rate and demand of mill owners. After this discussion, the purchase price of sugarcane has been fixed at Rs 300 per quintal which is more than last year and this has made the farmers happy and enthusiastic.

This year the farmers have sown sugarcane only in about 10 thousand hectare area which compared to last year is less. Sugarcane is a cash crop and to promote it, it is natural to expect a higher price. Mill owners fix sugarcane rate twice in a session. Generally the rate of sugarcane in the second session is satisfactory. This year also the rate of sugarcane is expected to increase. District administration has taken the decision only after area’s purchase of sugarcane will it be purchased from outside. Also, if in future rate of sugar changes, discussion will be held in this connection again.

Mill owners have commenced sugarcane purchase from December 12. One sugarcane mostly weighs from 2 to 7 kgs and the weight of 20-22 sugarcanes becomes about a quintal. In such a situation farmers get good price for each sugarcane on an average. Sugarcane producing farmers are now happy to get proper price for their produce. Their joy indicates that if they get good price for their produce in future also they will increase the sugarcane area rakba accordingly.-
