M.P. Tableau on Sanchi Stupa Included In Republic Day Parade of 2018

Bhopal: The Tableau of Sanchi Stupa will grace the Republic Day Parade of the year 2018. The selection committee of the Defence Ministry has approved the Tableau of Madhya Pradesh based on theme : ‘Sanchi-An Eminent Buddhist Pilgrimage Centre’. The Tableau has secured a place in Republic Day Parade 2018 after passing through competitive selection process amongst 30 Tableau of various states/UTs.
Sanchi Stupa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an eminent Buddhist Pilgrimage Centre situated near Vidisha, 46 kilometer north-east of Bhopal, in Raisen district. The Buddhist Great Stupa is one of the oldest stone structures in India.
Originally commissioned by the Emperor Ashoka the Great in 3rd century BC in honour of Lords Buddha, its construction was personally overseen by his wife Devi. Four elaborately carved ornamental gateways and a balustrade encircling the entire structure were added in the 1st century BC. The Sanchi Stupa built during Mauryan period was made of bricks, which was subsequently covered with stone during the Shunga period.
The Sanchi gateways or Torans, facing four cardinal directions are adorned with fine works of art. They depict scenes from the life of the Buddha and his previous lifetimes described in Jataka tales. The Great Stupa also has other architectural marvels in the vicinity like Ashoka Pillar, Chetiyagiri Vihara, Archaeological Museum, Buddhist monasteries, and temples.
Madhya Pradesh Government organizes three day International Sanchi Festival every year at Sanchi which draws millions of Buddhist monks and devotees from different parts of the country and abroad. Sanchi Stupa has large number of Brahmi inscriptions of great historical significance from Maurya, Shunga, Satavahana, Kushana and Gupta periods.-Window To News
