Bhopal: Forest Department STF team arrested international turtle smuggler Manivannam Murgesan from Chennai yesterday and today presented him before the Special Court of Sagar. The court has handed over Murgesan on 5-day remand to STF.
Murgesan was wanted by STF, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, U.P STF Police and Interpol since a long time. Murgesan is ranked third in the world in the illegal trade of rare species of turtles. He is considered the kingpin of India’s illegal trade market.
Murgesan’s name had surfaced for the first time during the interrogation of Ajay Chauhan of Agra for Red Crown Rooted Turtle. His name again surfaced during the interrogation of Mohd. Irfan who was arrested by State STF in Kolkata recently.
A Singapore based businessman, Murgesan has illegal trade links in Thailand, Malaysia, Macau, Hong Kong, China and Madagascar besides Singapore. His arrest will prove to be very significant in busting the international wildlife smuggling network.-Window To News
