Bhopal: Presidents and Competent Officers of Water Consumers’ Bodies of Madhya Pradesh will participate in a three day long training session in Bhopal from April 10. The newly elected presidents and competent officers of 1765 water consumers’ bodies will take part in the training to be held in WALMI- Bhopal.
It may be mentioned that concrete efforts have been made in Madhya Pradesh to ensure participation of farmers in irrigation management. Madhya Pradesh is second after Andhra Pradesh where legal provisions have been made for this.
Participation of farmers is in implementation under the Madhya Pradesh Irrigation Management 1999 Act. Currently irrigation management work is being carried out in about 25 lakh hectare command area through 2024 water consumers’ bodies in the state. Provision has been made in the Madhya Pradesh Irrigation Management 1999 Act that in any water consuming area such wives of land holders who are not land holders have also been recognized as land holders. This has helped women not only to take part in the election but they can also play roles to take part in the irrigation management. Moreover, provision has been made in the Act that out of 6 sub-societies formed for the functioning of agriculture organizations, one can be constituted in the form of women sub-society.-WTN
