Exhibition begins on rock shelters and paintings of Bhimbetka on World Heritage Day

Bhopal: An exhibition on painting and scenes of rock shelters of Bhimbetka was inaugurated by Commissioner Archeology and Public Relations Anupam Rajan on World Heritage Day today. Rock shelters of Bhimbetka are famous for its prehistoric age and its caves are famous for rock paintings and rock shelters made by human.
The exhibition, through its 65 pictures, provides information about archeologist Dr. Vishnu Shridhar Vakankar, who discovered different dimensions of Bhimbetka and excavation process. Organised by Directorate of Archeology and Archive and Museum, the exhibition will remain open for all between10.30 am to 5.30 pm between April 18 and 25 at State Museum.
Anupam Rajan said that exhibitions and other medium are more interesting and informative because they communicate archeological material and information about time calculation in simple language. Rajan took information about excavation process, weapons and colours made in different historical periods. Bhimbetka site was discovered by Dr Vishnu Shridhar Vakankar in 1957-58. UNESCO declared Bhimbetka, located 46 km away from Bhopal and located in Raisen district, World Heritage Site in July 2003. The rock paintings are believed to be of 12000 years ago. Total 750 rock shelters are in Bhimbetka and paintings have been made on 500 rocks. Organised on occasion of World Heritage Day, the exhibition aims to introduce people about their rich-heritage and sensitise them towards it.-WTN
