Clean drinking water made available to 152 families with ‘Jal-Choupal’

Bhopal: ‘Jal-Choupal’ has enabled supply of clean and pure drinking water to 152 families in Banikhedi village of Javra development block in scheduled caste-dominated Ratlam district. This village has a population of 1100 persons out of whom 400 belong to the scheduled caste category.
Only 5 hand pumps in the village are supplying drinking water of which 3 hand pumps became unusable due to excess of hard water. The water from these hand pumps started being used for decantation etc. Women were subjected to great difficulties due to unavailability of clean drinking water. Sometimes, the situation led to disputes also.
A drinking water committee of villagers was constituted after organising ‘jal-choupal’ on the initiative of Public Health Engineering. The committee members included 5 men and 6 women. The committee held a detailed discussion to redress the drinking water problem. It was decided at the meeting of the committee that personal tap connections will be given to all houses in the village through pipeline.
A minimum deposit fee of Rs 1000 and Rs 75 per connection has been fixed for tap connection. The committee got quality construction of the drinking water scheme by the contractor fixed by the Department. Villagers from each house in the village were made to fill the documents. All 152 families in the village took personal water connections.
As a result domestic water connections were given to villagers for pure and clean drinking water. The 152 families now have access to clean and pure drinking water through personal tap connections instead of depending on just 2 hand-pumps. An important side of ‘Jal-choupal’ is that the families who were not able to take tap connections, have been given free water connections.-WTN
