Public of Gwalior to get sufficient water

Bhopal: Final shape has been given to the scheme of making sufficient drinking water available to the people of Gwalior as per their need at a meeting held at the Mantralaya recently to resolve drinking water supply in Gwalior. The meeting was chaired by Gwalior district minister in charge Gaurishankar Bisen. Urban Development and Housing Minister Smt. Maya Singh, Water Resources Minister Dr. Narottam Mishra, Higher Education Minister Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya, MLA Bharat Singh Kushwaha and concerned Principal Secretaries and departmental heads were present at the meeting.

It was told at the meeting that 770 mcft water is available for water supply in Gwalior from Tighra dam. If water is supplied daily, drinking water can be supplied for 64 days. If water is supplied on alternate days, the supply can be extended to 96 days. It was informed that 125, 1020 and 500 mcft water this way a total of 1645 mcft water is available for distribution in Gwalior from Upper Kaketo, Kaketo and Pehsari dam respectively. By lifting this water up to Tighra, the availability of water for supply will be total 2445 mcft. At present 8 mcft water is needed daily in Gwalior city. With 2445 mcft water in stock, it can be supplied for 187 days in Gwalior till March 1, 2018 and if water is supplied on alternate days, it can be supplied for 280 days that is till June 2, 2018.

Gwalior Mayor said during the meeting that if 1200 mcft water is made available the Nagar Nigam can supply water to Gwalior city till the rainy season next year. Chief Engineer Urban Administration told that a decision was taken to begin the process of lifting water from Kaketo and Pehsari dam for water supply to Gwalior city immediately. The Chief Engineer said that an estimation is being prepared after discussion with Union Minister for Urban Development Narendra Singh Tomar to provide nearly 84 MCM water to Gwalior through pumping from Chambal river. The proposal is being sent to the centre.

Principal Secretary Water Resources said that lifting 2300 mcft water from Kaketo and Pehsari dam is another alternative to make drinking water available to Gwalior. A decision has been taken to invite tenders and government approval DPR immediately after giving approval to a Rs 12 crore 65 lakh scheme at the meeting to take 50 percent lifted water to Tighra dam.

Farmers Welfare Minister Gaurishankar Bisen told that the scheme to bring water from Chambal river to Gwalior will be worth Rs 500 crores and Rs 60 crores will be spent every year on bringing water to Gwalior from Chambal river on storage. He told that the scheme is under consideration. Decision has also been taken to prepare a detailed estimation of another massive scheme for bringing water through R.C.C. canal through a pipeline brought from Khubi canal and river-WTN
