Women Running Shops in Village Kanvas

Bhopal: Mayabai and Janki, residents of village Kanvas, Chichli block of district Narsinghpur who were economically dependent on daily wages, now running grocery shops successfully. Not only income of these women has increased because of the grocery shop but economic condition of their houses has improved. This has become possible owing to the Madhya Pradesh Deendayal Antodaya Yojana. The Antodaya scheme is being conducted by forming self-help groups under the State Rural Livelihood Mission.

Mayabai Chowdhary is linked to the Vaibhav Laxmi Self-Help Group of Gram Utthan Samiti Kanvas. She is now earning a monthly income of Rs. 8,800 at an average. Mayabai has earned an income of over Rs. 5 lakh till now from the grocery shop. She is also running a Manihari (Bangles and Cosmetic) shop along with grocery shop and her tailoring work is also going on successfully. The family of Mayabai was dependent on daily wages before she linked to the group and her family was unable to make their both the ends meet due to the insufficient income.

Janki Sahu of the same village was also supporting her family with daily wages amidst the economic crunch. She also took economic assistance from the Jai Ambe Self-Help group and is running a grocery shop in her house now. Janki Sahu has received the amount of Rs. 2 lakh 50 thousand in the form of third bank linkage from the Livelihood Mission. She has also started grains trading along with the grocery shop.

Other women drawing inspirations from the success of women with the assistance of Rural Livelihood Mission have started linking themselves with the self-help groups.-Windowtonews
